SAND DUNES WORKSHOP
Sand dunes are my absolute favorite place to shoot outside. Hands down. You just show up and it feels like your mission (should you choose to accept) is already accomplished. And really, all you have to do is take one photo and you know it will be a good one. The stunning landscape has already done most of the work for you. You can actually feel the magic as you step your bare feet though the sand. I love the the simplicity, scale, and vastness. It’s like geometry within nature. I appreciate good composition, and the minimal lines and sweeping shapes really allow you to play around. Sand dunes are basically a giant playground. You’re actually encouraged to get naked and run free. That’s what I’ve been told, anyways.
I’ve always believed that if you live in a city like LA, you have to escape the madness at least once a month. Drive somewhere at least a few hours away, and just breathe. I can’t explain it any other way than this feeling… you find yourself out in the middle of the desert or up in the mountains, and you think to yourself, “Yep, I needed this.” And when I’m in that place, feeling fresh, feeling restored, feeling inspired, feeling free… that’s when I make art. Art without limitations. Art without stress. Art without censorship. Most of my favorite images that I have taken are in sand dunes. Seriously.
Let’s not get too serious though, this is going to be a whole lot of fun. Workshops are traditionally where you learn something new, but I believe it should be an experience. Something you walk away from feeling inspired. Of course, there should be some fun along the way. This will be all of the above. It’s going to be a bunch of creatives nerding out together in the desert. Ok that sounds weird. Maybe because it is, and weird is ok. We embrace weird.
So here’s the plan. We’re going to magically rendezvous at my favorite coffee shop in LA, get in a big van (not that kind of weird van), drive 3 hours while playing corners, singalongs, snacks, In-N-Out runs, and of course, run around and take photos in the sand dunes. Oh, clothing is optional… for the models. Really though, if you want to run off naked into the sunset, no one is going to stop you. You, and no I’m not speaking directly to the streaker, I’m talking to anyone who embarks on this adventure, will make at least one new friend, or ten. Literally. Did I mention there are only 10 spaces available? They are filling up fast, so don’t miss out!
Ok, let's briefly talk about a few semi important details. It’s not going to be all fun and games, there will be secrets too. I’m an open book. I’ll walk you through what goes on in my head - creatively and technically during a shoot. You can ask me anything about shooting, editing, presets, working with models, agencies, anything. I’ll have two experienced and talented models that I truly love working with. The kind that are easy to work with, and really elevate your images, just like the sand dunes. Keep scrolling to see these beautiful humans.
I’ll break the ice (or sand) and shoot the first look. We’ll break off into different groups at times and give you a chance to direct the shoot. There are 2 spaces available for models to sign up. So there will be 4 total including the 2 official models I already have set. There will be plenty of talent and we can mix and match however you all fancy. The first few looks will be more styled and fashion based, then we’ll work our way into some nude concepts. Feel free to bring sheets or fabrics, or any other random props that you want to throw into the mix. We can all collaborate here. We’ll have around 3 hours to shoot from late afternoon (getting some sweet harsh light and shadows), through golden hour a.k.a. magic hour, leading up to sunset.
Imperial Sand Dunes. If you haven’t been here yet, it’s another world. It’s practically in Mexico. The drive there has amazing roads and view after view. We get to drive by the infamous Salton Sea, and we’ll be stopping around Palm Springs on the way back for dinner. I love these particular sand dunes because of their sweeping shape, and the epic mountain backdrop. In fact, Star Wars filmed several scenes here for Return of The Jedi. That’s how legit this location is. It honestly doesn’t get any better.
